The quest begins as the player exits from the Vault 18 cavern, entering Onyx Point and finally setting foot in the Cajon Pass proper. They have five real-time minutes to reach a safe distance from Vault 18 before it explodes. The player's quest markers suggest either Rockwell Tunnel or Jack's Gas Station. When the detonation triggers, a massive explosion ignites - causing a large amount of smoke to spread around the next few miles. Onyx Point also becomes inaccessible due to the blast, blocked by rubble and lethal amounts of radiation.
After the smoke clears, Ben mentions heading to the Wasteland Scout safehouse in Pinehaven to rest, starting the next major quest: A Night In Pinehaven.
Completing the quest automatically adds the Battle Fatigue perk to the player.

Several items required for the Scoutmaster challenge are found within the area of the detonation, and become inaccessible after the quest ends. See the Scoutmaster page for more information.
